Barcelona has a lovely opera house and we got tickets to see Aida. The show was excellent, though I'm not enough of an opera connoisseur to be able to say much about it, except that I particularly enjoyed thw two female leads. The pace of the show was very civilized - an intermission between each of the 4 acts - so the show lasted until midnight.
The opera house was remarkable for the verticality of the auditorium - it had 5 balconies:
...and for the grandeur of its great hall, where refreshments are served during intermissions. It was difficult to capture this space while thronged with people.
The bars were stacked high with glasses ready for cava and jamon bocadillos (ham sandwiches) - even the opera house doesn't escape their ubiquity. There's something very endearing about this, since you can't get much more than a bag of peanuts in most theaters in the States. We were recently at the city's concert hall and found the same thing, but there we also noticed that many people actually brought bocadillos from home!
